Explore the Essence of Simonsig Mediterraneo
The Simonsig Mediterraneo is more than a wine; it is a celebration of Mediterranean grape varieties perfectly blended to captivate the senses. Stemming from the heart of Simonsig Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa, this limited-production white blend reflects the estate’s dedication to quality and innovation.
A Legacy of Excellence
Nestled in the renowned Stellenbosch region, Simonsig Wine Estate stands as a testament to South Africa’s rich viticultural heritage. Established by Frans Malan, a pioneer in South African winemaking, Simonsig is acclaimed for being the birthplace of Kaapse Vonkel—the country’s first Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wine. This legacy of excellence continues with Mediterraneo, a wine that embodies the estate’s commitment to both tradition and innovation.
The Craftsmanship Behind the Blend
“Mediterraneo” stands as a tribute to the great white wines of the Mediterranean, taking inspiration particularly from southern France and Spain. The blend consists of five Mediterranean grape varieties, each selected for their ability to thrive in Stellenbosch’s Mediterranean-like climate. These grapes include Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Verdelho, and Bourboulenc, contributing to a wine that is both complex and layered.
Each variety brings a unique character to the blend:
- Marsanne contributes body, texture, and a subtle nuttiness.
- Roussanne offers floral aromatics and freshness.
- Grenache Blanc adds citrus notes and minerality.
- Verdelho brings vibrancy and lively acidity.
- Bourboulenc provides delicacy and elegance.
Only 9–10 barrels of Simonsig Mediterraneo are produced each vintage, underlining its exclusivity and artisanal craftsmanship.
Terroir and Viticulture
Stellenbosch benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by winter rainfall and long, dry summers moderated by cooling Atlantic breezes. These conditions are ideal for preserving the acidity and freshness of the grapes, essential for crafting a wine of Mediterraneo’s caliber.
The estate’s vineyards, rooted in well-drained soils, ensure optimal growth conditions for the Mediterranean varieties. Simonsig is committed to sustainable viticulture, managing vineyards with precision to maintain both grape quality and environmental health.
