Simonsig Rosé offers a glimpse into the soul of South African winemaking, blending tradition and innovation to create wines that narrate the story of Stellenbosch’s renowned terroir. With a rich history and a reputation for excellence, Simonsig is not just a brand, it’s a testament to the enduring legacy of the Malan family.

Simonsig Wine Estate: A Heritage of Excellence

Located in the heart of Stellenbosch, just east of Cape Town, the Simonsig Wine Estate stands as a beacon of winemaking innovation and tradition. Named after the majestic Simonsberg Mountain, Simonsig is celebrated for its pioneering spirit. Founded in 1971 by Frans Malan, the estate has set benchmarks in the wine industry by introducing South Africa’s first bottle-fermented sparkling wine, Kaapse Vonkel, and establishing the first wine tourism route in Stellenbosch.

The Essence of Simonsig Rosé

Simonsig Rosé is a part of this esteemed estate’s distinguished portfolio, consisting of two primary expressions: the Simonsig Needless to Say Rosé, a vibrant still rosé, and the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé, a sparkling delight crafted in the traditional Cap Classique method. Each wine encapsulates Simonsig’s commitment to quality and the expressive potential of Stellenbosch’s fertile terroir.

Still Rosé - Simonsig Needless to Say

Crafted from a blend of 64% Chenin Blanc and 36% Pinotage, Simonsig Needless to Say Rosé pays homage to the estate’s first productions of these varietals. The 2023 vintage benefited from the earliest harvest in Simonsig’s history, which coupled with cool weather, provided the ideal conditions for a vibrant, fruit-driven wine.

This still rosé enchants with its radiant, cotton candy pink hue and an aromatic bouquet of strawberry sherbet, passion fruit, and ripe pineapple, intertwined with delicate white blossom notes. Its palate provides a refreshing zing of acidity with a light, creamy texture, making it the perfect accompaniment for light salads, seafood, and delicate poultry dishes.

Sparkling Rosé - Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé

The sparkling counterpart, Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé, holds historical significance as South Africa’s first Cap Classique, instantly placing it in prestigious company. Crafted with a blend of 77% Pinot Noir, 22% Pinotage, and 1% Pinot Meunier, this 2022 vintage showcases a timeless elegance.

The grapes, benefiting from Stellenbosch’s cool maritime influence, are handpicked and whole-bunch pressed, then fermented to preserve the fruit’s true character. Aged on lees for 15 months, it develops a complex biscuity profile balanced with raspberry, cranberry, and subtle floral notes.

Enjoyment and Occasions

Both of these rosés demonstrate the versatility and vibrancy of Simonsig wines. The Needless to Say Rosé is ideal for casual, everyday enjoyment, while the Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé serves as a remarkable alternative to traditional Champagne, enhancing both celebratory and solemn moments.

The Simonsig Philosophy: Innovation Meets Tradition

Upholding a legacy of innovation with sustainable farming practices, Simonsig remains dedicated to producing wines that pay homage to their rich heritage. Under the stewardship of the Malan family, this philosophy has led to the creations that perfectly encapsulate the unique characteristics of Stellenbosch, offering a taste that is rich in flavor and elegant in every way.

In a world of many wines, few come close to the bold expressions offered by Simonsig Rosé. These are wines that not only captivate the palate but also narrate the story of an estate that continues to influence the world of wine, one sip at a time.
