The humble frankfurter, not to be confused with the commonly attributed hot dog or weiner, originates from the German city with the same name, Frankfurt am Main. These wonderful sausages are traditionally made with 100% pork meat and are slowly smoked over hours to impart the trademark smokiness often associated with this savory delight.
The sausages themselves have been enjoyed by many people around the world and have become so popular, other countries have adopted their own versions. In Vienna, they are known as Frankfurter Würstl and were apparently introduced by a trained butcher who immigrated to Vienna in 1805. In North America, and many other countries around the world, frankfurters refer to the boiled or steamed hot dog sausages most commonly found in hotdog sandwiches.
Traditional frankfurters are usually enjoyed with copious amounts of bread, horseradish, and potato salad. A meal fit for royalty, but enjoyed by everyone.
The sausage comes frozen and vacuum packed. Store in freezer. Thaw only when about to cook. Leftover cooked meat can only be kept in the fridge for 3 to 4 more days. Consume immediately.
