New Zealand is known around the world for its excellent Sauvignon Blanc. The fertility and acidity of the soil coupled with the favorable climate produce one of the best Sauvignon Blancs in the world. However, New Zealand has also proven that the Pinot Noir grape is also fantastic when produced in New Zealand. Edmond de Rothschild vineyards has taken advantage of this and, in the Rimapere vineyard, produces a fine Pinot Noir that is young, but ready to drink. It could also do well with a bit more aging in a cellar.
This Pinot is light and smooth. The tannins are soft and do not linger. It is a dry wine with emphasis on acidity. It is refreshing and easily sipped. Like the Sauvignon Blanc of Rimapere, this Pinot is extremely easy to drink on a summer’s afternoon. To the eye: a beautiful light ruby red that reminds one of rubies shining in the sun. On the nose: Notes of cracked pepper, red fruits, and earthiness are most noticeable. On the palate: berries, such as strawberry and cranberry can be experienced with a slight afterthought of cherry. Notes of leather and smoke towards the end.
This wonderful wine can be paired with white meats such as seared tuna and chicken breast. Duck is also an excellent option for this wine as the delicate flavor of the meat is well partnered with such a delicate wine.
Store your unopened bottle in a cool, dry, and dark place safe from constant vibration. Keep your bottle horizontal in a wine rack or cellar to retain the moistness of the cork. The ideal temperature for storage is between 7 to 15°C. Once opened, a bottle will be good for 3 to 5 days standing upright in the refrigerator.
