The La Houderay Saumur Champigny from world-class winemaker, Marcel Martin, is an interesting wine, to say the least. It is made from Cabernet Franc grapes, as per the custom and tradition of the area. The grapes are light, floral, and fruity, but not overpoweringly so.
This Cabernet Franc is quite light. It is medium bodied and has a short finish. It offers nice acidity and soft, well-rounded tannins. To the eye: cherry red with darker hues muddling their way through. On the nose: light notes of red fruits and spices. On the palate: plum, cherry, and other red berries and fruits are noticeable. Nice oakiness with a slight smokiness reminiscent of tobacco. A rather short finish but very pleasing and clean.
This wine pairs perfectly with a deliciously sharp cheese plate and lightly smoked meats, such as duck. It will pair perfectly with foie gras on crust bread. Enjoy with lighter mains, such as chicken and fish cooked in red sauce.
Store your unopened bottle in a cool, dry, and dark place safe from constant vibration. Keep your bottle horizontal in a wine rack or cellar to retain the moistness of the cork. The ideal temperature for storage is between 7 to 15°C. Once opened, a bottle will be good for 3 to 5 days standing upright in the refrigerator.
