Schloss Gobelsburg is the most prominent and oldest wine estate in the Austrian Danube river region of Kamptal. They have been creating exquisite wines since the 12th century, and are going strong till this very day. Their ‘Tradition’ wines, while part of an estate that believes in combining traditional techniques with modern winemaking practices, pay homage to the traditional techniques that have built winemaking into what it is today.
The Zweigelt grape is a rather young grape, having only been created in 1922 by Frederich Zweigelt. It is now considered to be the most planted red grape variety in Austria and shares a commonality with Pinot Noir. The Domæne Schloss Gobelsburg Zweigelt Reserve is a wonderful wine. It is subtle and soft, offering well-balanced tannins. But where the magic lies is in the balance of dryness, acidity, a slight, playful sweetness. To the eye: bright reds greet the eye offering a sensation of levity and playfulness. On the nose: delicious notes of dark, red fruit, cloves, and leather can be observed. On the palate: wonderful notes of red and dark fruits, liquorice, and leather are presented alongside a fresh, playful minerality that refreshes the palate. The wine is medium-bodied and offers a nice, playful finish.
This delicious wine pairs perfectly with chicken and pork. Nice, light fragrant dishes such as biryani and papaya salad are perfect matches for this beautiful wine.
