Edam is one of those cheeses that is loved by many around the world. Named after the Dutch village from which it originated, this lovely cheese is as delicious as it is versatile in the kitchen. Traditionally, Edam is sold in spheres and promotes a pale yellow interior with a red paraffin wax.
Edam is mild, slightly salted, and promotes a delicious nuttiness. It is easy to eat and a favorite of many Filipinos, especially around Christmas where Queso de Bola is enjoyed as part of noche buena. Queso de Bola is Edam cheese.
But how can one enjoy this cheese? Edam, like gouda, melts wonderfully. It is a great substitute for parmesan and works well on salads, pastas, pizzas, and sandwiches. It is also paired excellently with dried fruits and nuts, such as apricot, and cherries. It also works fantastically with melon and pear. Edam is a delicious cheese that can be used in a variety of dishes thanks to its mild flavor. This ball of Edam is 2kg.
Cheeses (except brined ones in jars) should be stored in the crisper or the butter drawer of a refrigerator, not on the shelves themselves. This is to help regulate their temperature and humidity levels—and prevents the formation of mold. Once opened, they should not be kept in their original packaging. Soft cheeses with delicate rinds need to breathe, so they are best placed in glass containers lined with paper towels to absorb extra moisture. Leave the lid open a tiny bit for air to circulate and don’t forget to write up a label with the date you first opened the package. Kindly pay attention to the best before date label when you receive your cheese. Consume prior to date indicated.
